Sabine Brohm studied voice at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden.
On having finished her studies she was engaged at the Opera Studio in Dresden, and
subsequently has become a member of the ensemble of the Saxonian State Opera (Semperoper),
Dresden, where she performed a wide range of roles: Blumenmädchen in Parsifal, Susanna
in Le Nozze di Figaro, Marzelline in Fidelio, Marie in Zar und Zimmermann, Despina
in Così fan tutte, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Mila in Osud (Janácek), Antonia in
Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Marie in The Bartered Bride (Smetana) staged by Peter Konwitschny
with Michail Jurowski as conductor, Stimme des Falken in Die Frau ohne Schatten,
Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Countess de la Roche in Die
Soldaten (B. A. Zimmermann), as well as Autonoe in Die Bassariden (Henze). She furthermore
sang Cordelia in Aribert Reimann’s opera Lear staged by Willy Decker, created the
role of Sylva Varescu in the premiere of Peter Konwitschny’s spectacular production
of Die Csárdásfürstin, and appeared with great success in the role of Christine in
the world premiere of Peter Ruzicka’s opera Celan. She performed Gerhilde in Willy
Decker’s Walküre-production, sang Gutrune in Die Götterdämmerung, Luigia in Viva
la Mamma conducted by Massimo Zanetti, the title role in the world premiere of the
opera “Nico – Sphinx aus Eis” by Ari Benjamin Meyers, as well as Jenny in Weill’s
Mahagonny. She took part as Leitmetzerin in guest performances of the Semperoper’s
Rosenkavalier-production in Tokyo, and appeared in Dresden as Prothoe in Penthesilea
(Othmar Schoeck), Rosa Intrugli in the world premiere of the opera La Grande Magia
by Manfred Trojahn, Gertrud in Hansel and Gretel, and Dame in Cardillac (Hindemith).
In 2011-12, Sabine appeard as Mrs. Patrick de Rocher in J. Heggie’s opera Dead Man
Walking, Anna Maurant in Weill’s Street Scene and again as Gertud in Hansel and Gretel.
In 2012-13, her roles at the Saxonian State Opera include Kate Pinkerton in Madama
Butterfly, Signora Angiolieri in ‘Mario und der Zauberer’ based on Thomas Mann’s
novel of the same name, Königin in Prinz Bussel, Wife of Soldier 2 in Henze’s We
Come to the River as well as Gertrud.
As a guest-soprano Sabine Brohm sang in St. Petersburg, Minsk, Salzburg and at the
opera houses of Berlin (Deutsche Oper, Staatsoper unter den Linden), Essen, Karlsruhe,
Cologne, Munich (Bavarian State Opera), Wiesbaden, Vienna (Volksoper), Salvador de
Bahia, Brazil, and appeared as Gerhilde at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona in
Harry Kupfer’s production of Wagner’s Walküre under Bertrand de Billy. Sabine as
well is a frequent guest at the Staatsoperette Dresden, where she performed with
great success Boulotte in Jacques Offenbach’s Barbe Bleue, Manja in Gräfin Mariza,
and in the title roles of La Périchole and Großherzogin von Gerolstein. Engagements
there in the 2012-13 season include Grossherzogin von Gerolstein and Getrud in Hansel
On the opera and concert platform Sabine Brohm worked with noted conductors such
as Bertrand de Billy, Semyon Bychkov, Sir Colin Davis, Michail Jurowski, Friedemann
Leyer, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Ion Marin, Ingo Metzmacher, Christof Prick, Peter
Schneider, Peter Schreier, and Giuseppe Sinopoli.
In the genre of chamber music she has been working with the Dietzsch-Trio and the
chamber soloists of the Dresden Staatskapelle.
Also successful in the field of recital Sabine is focusing on programmes with lieder
by Eastern European composers such as Dvořák, Rachmaninov, Prokofjew and Tchaikovsky,
and has also an affinity for the German Romantics Brahms and Mahler. She gives solo-recitals
with varying repertoire and has performed the staged recital “Ein dunkler Schacht
ist Liebe – Liebesliederwalzer von Johannes Brahms”, a production of the Saxonian
State Opera, Dresden.
She took part in various CD and radio productions by the following labels and radio
stations: WDR, MDR, Berlin Rundfunk, Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandsender Kultur, Deutsche
Grammophone and EMI.
