The Brazilian/German tenor Martin Muehle was born in Porto Alegre. He took his first singing lessons with Jean-Charles Gebelin in Montevideo, Uruguay and continued his studies with James Wagner at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, Germany, where he graduated with success. In addition, he studied with Carlo Bergonzi at the Accademia Verdiana in Busseto, at the Accademia Chiggiana in Siena and with Alfredo Kraus in Santander (Spain).

Today Mr. Muehle prepares his repertoire with Rita Patanè in Milan and Ilko Natchev in Vienna.

 

He made his operatic debut as Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore at the Bremerhaven City Theatre (Germany), where he also sang Des Grieux in Boulevard Solitude by Henze, Fenton in Falstaff, Ladislav in Smetana’s Die zwei Witwen, Alfred in Die Fledermaus (The Bat), Belfiore in La Finta Giardiniera and the Swan in Orff’s Carmina Burana.

 

Since 2000, guest engagements led him for instance to the Leipzig Opera House as Arionoff in the world premiere of Dmitrij oder Der Künstler und die Macht by Luca Lombardi, to the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Alesi in the world premiere of the opera Ellis Island by G. Sollima, as Alwa in Lulu by A. Berg and as Narraboth in Salome (2005). In 2004 he appeared at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro as Tamino in The Magic Flute. In the same year he guested at the Bad Ischl Operetta Festival as Duke in A Night in Venice by Johann Strauß. In 2004/05 he sang Alfred in Die Fledermaus in Brandenburg and Potsdam. At the Theatre of Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna he guested as Count Zedlau in the operetta Wiener Blut in the season of 2005/06, and he appeared with great success at the Baden City Theatre (Austria) as Mr X in The Circus Princess by E. Kálmán. Also in 2006 he was engaged at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse as the Apparition of a Young Man in The Woman Without a Shadow by Richard Strauss (Cond.: Pinchas Steinberg, Dir.: Nicolas Joel) and as Ulrich Eisslinger in R. Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. He furthermore sang the role of Dr. S in The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by M. Nyman at the Teatro São Pedro in São Paulo and he appeared in the same part at the Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 2007.

 

Also in 2007, Martin Muehle returned to Austria’s operetta capital Baden (near Vienna) to sing the title role in Lehár’s Paganini. At the Amazonas Opera House in Manaus he appeared as the Steersman in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman (Dir.: Ch. Schlingensief) and as Sergej in Lady Macbeth of Mzensk by D. Shostakovich.

 

Operatic highlights of 2008 and 2009 included Narraboth at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Erik in The Flying Dutchman at the Teatro Nacional in Brasilia, The Lover in G. Menotti’s Amelia al Ballo at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Theatre of the Jewish Culture Center Sao Paolo and Ismaele in Verdi’s Nabucco at the International Herrenchiemsee Festival in Germany (alongside Paolo Gavanelli and Carlo Colombara) as well as Calaf in Turandot at the Amazonas Opera Festival in Manaus, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly and Canio in I Pagliacci both at the Opera of Sao Paolo. In 2010 Martin guested as Alfredo in La Traviata, Ismaele in Nabucco and in the title-role of Andréa Chénier at the Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. 2011 Martin performed Don José in Carmen at the Teatro Avenida in Buenos Aires to great acclaim. Furthermore he gave two debuts with great success at the Teatro Municipal de Sao Paolo: Sigmund in Die Walküre as well as Peri in Carlos Gomes opera Il Guarany.

 

Engagements in the 2011/12 season include his debut at the Opéra Bastille in Paris as Tchekalinsky in Pique Dame and Froh in Das Rheingold as well as Pollione in Norma in Buenos Aires. In 2012/13 he will repeat Froh at the Teatro Argentino de La Plata.

 

In concert fields, Martin Muehle focuses on the repertoire of the Romantic period. He sang, amongst others, Gounod’s Messe Solennelle de St. Cecillie at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Cathedral of Porto Alegre. Furthermore he performed Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the distinguished Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte as well as Gustav Mahler´s Das Lied von der Erde under Ira Levin at the Teatro Nacional in Brasilia.
